This is an exploratory work using the manual based cognitive behaviour therapy developed by Dr Philip C Kendall. The CBT attempts to use a computer based approach to make it more interesting. Currently the team includes Dr Sandra Mendlowitz, Ms Alisa Kenny and Dr Katharina Manassis. We are currently piloting the treatment on individual children who are selectively mute. The CBT programme is a work in progress and is available here but you need to contact Dr Daniel Fung for the password. A case study of our first case is available here. The protocol is not yet available (please contact Dr Daniel Fung for more details. If you are in North America, please contact Dr Sandra Mendlowitz) |

This is an exploratory work using a augmentative/ alternative communication (AAC) device to help children with selective mutism in Singapore. Based on a single case study (Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry 40(4): 389), we are developing a treatment protocol comparing the use of the device with standard behavioural treatments currently used for selectively mute children. The team includes Ms Carolyn Kee and Ms Joyce Leong. Please contact Dr Daniel Fung for details. |

This is an exploratory work on trying to understand selective mutism in the context of language and learning in these children. Most of the recent studies on selective mutism focused on understanding anxiety as the basis for the selective mutism. Yet many studies have shown that up to 50% of selectively mute children have a speech related problem. The difficulty in studying this area for selectively mute children is the difficulty in testing these children. We have devised an assessment protocol that assesses these children using non verbal techniques in unfamiliar situations and verbal testing in a familiar situation (applied by the parents). The team consists of Dr Katharina Manassis, Dr Rosemary Tannock, Dr Leon Sloman and Dr Daniel Fung. Some information for parents is found here. The full protocol is available here (please contact Dr Daniel Fung for the password). Preliminary findings are found here. |

Currently, our teams at HSC and CGC have been working on a number of research projects related to selective mutism at both sites. This page is to outline the research and also give information to parents participating in the research projects. If you are interested, please email me and I shall contact you personally to discuss our research. |
